Walk into most schools and you'll find kids grouped by age. The assumption, baked into nearly every structure of traditional education, is that children born in the same year are ready to learn the same things at the same time. They aren't. They never have been. And we've known this for a long time.
Schools built differently start with a different premise: that learning is competency-based, not time-based. A learner advances when they're ready — when they can demonstrate what they know — not when the calendar says so. We call this Customized Learning. And it changes everything about how a school operates.
When you remove grade levels as the organizing principle, you have to replace them with something real. That something is a deep understanding of each learner — where they are, where they're headed, and what they need next. Facilitators need tools that hold that picture.
